The geothermal project on Dominica in the Caribbean is now starting production drilling again. The drilling is done by Iceland Drilling company with drilling services provided by ÍSOR, also from Iceland.

Yesterday, Icelandic ÍSOR announced that production drilling for geothermal heat is starting again on the volcanic island of Dominica in the Caribbean . It is planned to drill two wells with a depth of 1,200-1,800 m.

ÍSOR has designed two new wells for the government of Dominica. One reinjection well and one production well. It is estimated that drilling will start next week. Iceland Drilling is the contracted drilling company. ÍSOR handles drilling consultancy involving borehole geology , measurement and performance measurement in wells and environmental monitoring, including the measurement of hydrogen sulphide  It is expected two to three employees from ÍSOR will be in Dominica more or less on the island until March next year.

Last year, there were three exploration wells drilled in Dominica. ÍSOR was responsible for the design of the wells , consulting, tracking and environment monitoring. Drilling wells were successful and power production potential was established. It is hoped that the now planned new production holes will be sufficient to be able to build a small geothermal power plants to generate electricity needed for the residents of Dominica. Currently, Dominica relies on power generation fueled by diesel, with the associated costs and pollution. There are plans for even bigger geothermal development, which could also establish electricity export to neighboring island states in the Caribbean.
