EDC plans to restore 20% of Leyte capacity by year end
Energy Development Corp. plans to have restored up to 20% of total capacity of the Unified Leyte geothermal plants after the outage after the Typhoon Yolanda in November.
Reported today from the Philippines, “Energy Development Corp (EDC) aims to increase power generation from the Unified Leyte geothermal complex before the year ends.
Ernesto B. Pantangco, EDC executive vice president, said repairs are ongoing at the power complex, which incurred damage from Typhoon ‘Yolanda’.
The power facility is producing about 50 megawatts (MW), a fraction of its total generating capacity of around 640 MW.
Pantangco said this should go down to only 12 MW today because the company will install some equipment as part of repairs.
The company, however, plans to jack this up “if everything goes well [to] about 147 MW by end-year,” he said.
Located in Tongonan, Leyte, the geothermal plant’s output is covered by a power purchase agreement between EDC and state-owned National Power Corp (Napocor).”
