Mexican CFE’s bidding process to add 100 MW to Cerro Prieto plant

The bidding process for the 100 MW extension to the Cerro Prieto geothermal power plant of CFE in Baja California, Mexico, sees an interest of seven parties. Those have purchased bidding rules and are likely to include previous bidders: ICA Fluor Daniel, Alstom Mexicana, Itochu, Mitsubishi and Prolec GE Internacional.
As reported in April, this was reported again this week from various sources. In April BN Americas reported that “Mexico’s state-owned Compania Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has “launched an international tender for the construction of a 100MW geothermal plant to expand capacity at its Cerro Prieto field in Baja California state, according to federal procurement website Compranet.
The Cerro Prieto V plant will be made up of two 50MW turbines. Works also include a 161kV substation, a steam supply system, a water supply system and other associated equipment. Cerro Prieto currently has 720MW installed capacity. Bidding rules are available through July 16, with bids due July 22.
Works are scheduled to begin September 16 and run 956 days.
This marks the second time CFE has launched a tender for the 100MW capacity. In 2008, CFE received a bid for the works that did not comply with technical requirements, BNamericas reported at the time.
As of the final project meeting of the first tender, the following firms had purchased bidding rules: ICA Fluor Daniel, Alstom Mexicana, Itochu, Mitsubishi and Prolec GE Internacional.” Now there were seven players who purchased the bidding rules, and it can be expected that the players mentioned above are part of that group.
According to Industrial News, the 720 MW Cerro Prieto Geothermal Power Station in Baja California, Mexico, will be expanded to 820 MW by 2012. The plant currently operates 13 generating units equipped with turbines ranging from 25 to 110 MW that were manufactured by Toshiba and Mitsubishi.”
