Tesla Gigafactory to come to Nevada
After intense competition between Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California, Reno will house Tesla's Gigafactory, in part thanks to its access to renewable energy like geothermal.
After much expectation, the massive $5 billion Tesla battery plant that will employ thousands has been decided to be built in Reno, Nevada.
According to local news, “The fact that Reno can bring to the table solar, geothermal and wind is very competitive for Reno,” said John Boyd, a principal with the New Jersey-based site selection firm The Boyd Co. “The raison d’etre for Tesla is all about sustainability and green energy.” Apart from these reasons, logistics and geographical advantage have also given Reno de leading edge over other candidates.
The sheer size of the plant and the expected volume of operations created an intense competition between Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California, specially in these trouble economic times and with a promise to create about 6,500 jobs.
One can now hope that Tesla not only will source the Lithium it requires from geothermal, but also the power it needs to run its planned factory. With the number of geothermal plants in Nevada, it will be likely and for geothermal, well these would be fantastic news.
