Fuelled by geothermal: Iceland’s swimming pool culture
Geothermally heated water has allowed Iceland to develop a unique swimming pool culture with open-air pools that are open year round.
In a great video trailer for a documentary on the unique swimming pool culture in Iceland, you can experience the important role that swimming pools play in Iceland. … and in particularly how important geothermal heated water for those pools is crucial given that the vast majority of all the 100+ pools are outdoors and open all year round. … and yes it does not always have to be the Blue Lagoon.
Having lived in Iceland now for more than 15 years, I can confirm what Iceland Magazine writes that “Icelanders are mad about their swimming pools; It‘s where people gather at the end of the day to unwind and have a little tête-à-tête.”
Icelandic filmmaker Jón Karl Helgason has been working on a film on Swimming Pools in Iceland, and below you can watch a short trailer of it.
