California based Geologica is now testing samples taken on a field survey by geologists on American Samoa in the Pacific funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Having reported on American Samoa’s recent efforts to evaluate its geothermal potential, a few details now emerge.

American exploration service firm Geologica, based in California, had two geologists working on site for two weeks doing preliminary tests. The soil and gas samples are now being sent for tests with results expected not sooner than by mid-/late March.

Principal geologist Joe Ivonetti says they will send soil and gas samples they have collected away for testing and it will be up to six weeks before results are known.

Like in any geothermal project, certainty about the potential will require drilling and this won’t happen at least until a year from now. So there won’t be a plant any time soon.

The scientists were contracted by the American Samoa Renewable Energy Committee and partner agencies using a grant from the the Department of Interior in the U.S.
