Opportunities for geothermal plants in the province of Alberta, Canada
The City of Grande Prairie in Alberta, Canada has 3 potential sites for geothermal development.
The City of Grande Prairie in Alberta, Canada might see some geothermal development. According to local news, “Jonathan Banks, a University of Alberta (U of A) research associate with a background in geothermal energy, pitched the green dream and explained he was looking for financial assistance to build geothermal reservoir models within the next year.”
This was followed by an overwhelming approval by the city’s council to identify potential sites for said geothermal development.
According to Mr Banks, “We are looking to put together a portfolio of the top-10 best potential geothermal electricity producing projects in Alberta, three of which are located right here in Grande Prairie,”
Financing is key for early stage exploration and development. “Banks has some financial backers in line, and is looking for half of the $130,000 project budget from municipalities.” said the local news source.
This are some great news that might add more momentum to the series of good news coming from the geothermal industry in Canada.

As part of its activities to promote geothermal development in Canada, the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) is working on collecting data on the potential for geothermal development. One of the projects was the work on the Alberta Geothermal Favourability Map. The data of these maps is “intended to serve as a geothermal exploration tool for making informed business decisions and mitigating investment risks.” Details can be found here: http://www.cangea.ca/alberta-geothermal-favourability-maps.html
