Rudy Suparman, Star Energy President provides insight on the current operations and outlook of his company in Indonesia.
Indonesia has a pressing need to increase the supply of energy to meet the fast growing demand. Fossil fuels are not enough to cover the expected growth nor they are sustainable in the long run, both for environmental and for cost reasons. This is why companies like Star Energy have emerged, to provide an alternative to hydrocarbons.
According to a recent article published in The World Folio, “Star Energy has successfully branched out into geothermal power. In line with its long-term strategy of creating value for all its stakeholders, the company moved into the sector with the acquisition of its first facility in 2004.”
The company has both a mix of renewables and fossil fuels plants, yet it is determined to expand its mix of renewables in the near future. According to the company’s president, Rudy Suparman “Star Energy took over the Wayang Windu project in West Java to operate geothermal assets, “We have since worked to develop this site and in February 2009, we had a major breakthrough when we built our own additional geothermal power unit. As a result, since this time we are operating two units at Wayang Windu, supplying Indonesia with more electricity generated through clean, green renewable means”.
In light of the recent change in legislation regarding geothermal in the country, the path is now a bit easier to expand operations yet Star Energy’s president also mentions that “to get the investment levels required to promote change to renewable energies, there needs to be strong political will”
