The Mineral Resource Authority (MRA) has confirmed that their study and sample extraction of three geothermal sites in Talasea in West New Britain Province is nearing completion.
Talasea LLG President Victor Narere said MRA had made it known that the final testing would be at the end of this year or early next year depending on the results.
“The final testing of the geothermal sites would include the drilling and placing of pipes into the geothermal reservoir to measure the quantity and pressure to conclude whether they could power the whole of the country with electricity,” says Narere.
He said so far, the previous testing results had positive feedback from a New Zealand laboratory and MRA hopes final testing would be the same.
According to Mr Narere the last leg of testing would cost millions and the landowners concerned in this new development have already registered two companies to control security and land issues that could drive away interest and investment.
MRA has confirmed that the Pangalu geothermal will be the potential site for the country in terms of boosting the economy.
