Uganda expects to determine the first drilling sites by mid-2013

Uganda expects determination of first drilling sites in three priority areas in the country and the development of a Geothermal Policy and legislation.
Uganda expects to have determined its geothermal potential and areas for potential drilling campaigns by the middle of this year.
Vincent Kato, the Principal Geologist at the country’s Geological Survey and Mines Department spoke in a recent interview, that his office has identified sites and four have been determined.
There are six licensed private companies, but things are still very much in exploration stage.
There are three prospective geothermal sites: Kibiro in Hoima, Katwe in Kasese and Panyimur in Nebbi. These areas have been put in priority and been funded by the government. There has been though no drilling on those sites yet.
The country, so Mr. Kato, is in the process of creating a Geothermal Policy and Geothermal Act to regulate geothermal development and activity in the country.
The German development KfW and the GIZ agency are helping with the development of a white paper, but also internal documentation. Uganda is looking at the region and its legislations, as policies should be harmonized in the East Africa region.
